Bike Parade Celebrates 25 Years

It started out as a silly and fun excuse to gather in a celebration of summer and enjoy an ice cream sundae. Somehow along the way, this annual get-together turned into one of the most iconic and anticipated events of the entire year. This year’s “Bike Parade & Ice Cream Social” is set for Wednesday, August 6th and will mark 25 years of this unique gathering. Since the start, there have been three basic components to the event.

  1. Decorating Our Bikes (starting at 5:30)

We cover our lawn with all sorts of crazy “decor” you can affix to your bike, trike, wagon, etc. The more, the better!

  2. The Parade (around 6:00)

With our wheels all decked out with fancy decor, it’s time to hit the street for the parade! We roll down Tracy Road, hang a right onto Summit Rd. (by S.R. Tracy), and then another right back onto Main Street for the “home stretch.” Everyone ends up back at The Neighborhood House for step 3. Just two make sure everything looks official, we also have some help from the Mt. Desert Police and Fire Departments to escort everyone along the parade route.

  3. Enjoy An Ice Cream Sundae (following the parade)

It’s tough work, but somebody’s got to do it. Whether you worked up an appetite riding in the parade, or were just cheering them on, everyone gets a sundae! And we’re not talking about out an ordinary ice cream sundae either. Each of our sundae’s is topped with homemade hot fudge we make right in our own kitchen.

Since celebrating the 24th anniversary of this event is kind of a big deal, we’ll be commemorating the fun with some special color-changing reusable sundae cups. There not available in stores, so the only way you can get one is by joining in on the fun. We hope to see “kids” of all ages turn out to help us celebrate on August 6th!
