Campfire Coalition Provides Heating Assistance

Winter is in full swing, and that means heating season is here as well. For many families on Mt. Desert Island and its surrounding communities, paying for that heat can be a struggle. That’s the precise reason The Neighborhood House and our friends at Harbor House Community Service Center teamed up to form the MDI Community Campfire Coalition. The mission is simple—provide heating assistance to families on MDI, the Cranberry Isles, and Swan’s Island.

The program is independent of any Federal or State programs, and the application process is simple. To qualify, you simply need to complete the application and provide some form of proof of income. Completed applications can be dropped off in person at The Neighborhood House or Harbor House, emailed, or faxed to 244-9569. All applications are kept fully confidential.

Applications are available online, as well as at local Town Offices, and many area churches and libraries. For more information or to request an application mailed to you, you can also call The Neighborhood House at 276-5039, or Harbor House at 244-3713.

Qualifying applicants can receive 100 gal. of heating oil, or the equivalent benefit for propane, electric, or wood heat. The Campfire Coalition is not intended for emergency situations, but rather as a one-time (per heating season) assist to help keep oil tanks from running dry. Applications are handled as quickly as possible, but please allow up to one week for a fuel delivery.
