COMMUNITY EVENTS
During the course of each year, The Neighborhood House, often in conjunction with other local groups and organizations, organizes numerous events and celebrations for the entire community to enjoy. Here are some of the events and programs that have become annual traditions in Mount Desert:

Town Christmas Festival
Each December The Neighborhood House, along with the Mount Desert Chamber of Commerce organizes the Northeast Harbor Christmas Festival. The Festival includes childrens' activities at the Northeast Harbor Library, a bonfire and music on Main Street, a food tent, lots of great shopping, and a holiday play performed by Acadia Community Theater.

Annual Bike Parade
Every summer kids of all ages flock to the front lawn of Neighborhood House to participate in the Bike Parade. Each bike, scooter, or tricycle is decked out with streamers and other decor before everyone takes to the parade route along Main Street. Led by a police escort and the trusty Neighborhood House van, the group returns to Neighborhood House for an ice cream social, which follows the festivities.

Sweetheart Valentine Dance
In what has quickly become an annual event, each February The Neighborhood House hosts the Sweetheart Valentine Dance. The event gives school-age girls and their guest (typically a father, grandfather, uncle, brother, etc.) a chance to dance the night away and enjoy a wide assortment of music, hors d'oeuvres, decorations, and party favors.

Community Dinners
The Neighborhood House periodically opens its doors for community dinners. Sometimes the event may be specifically geared towards children, and sometimes it is for the entire family. The most popular of these dinners is by far the "Chili Challenge," which occurs every winter. Contestants prepare their favorite chili recipe to be judged by the rest of the community, and the winner in each chili "category" takes home a coveted Neighborhood House apron.

Dances
During the winter months, Neighborhood House usually hosts at least one dance for adults. In the past, these dances have had themes, such as a beach party, or even a New Yearıs masquerade ball. Other local groups also hold periodic dance/concert fundraisers in the facility as well.

Halloween Party
Every Halloween, kids are sure to stop by The Neighborhood House for the annual Halloween Party and Haunted House. Not only can they get an early start on their candy collecting, but they can enjoy the various games and contests.

Ice Cream Socials
What better way to get people through the doors than to offer a chance to create your own ice cream sundae? Typically, in conjunction with other events such as the Annual Bike Parade of summer camp sign-up, ice cream socials are a great chance for the community to get together. Even those who are not participating in the event are always welcome and encouraged to stop by for the ice cream.

Dramatic Performances
In addition to the traditional holiday performance by the Acadia Community Theater, Neighborhood House has had a long history of theatrical performances dating back to the early 1900s. Today that tradition continues with various performances throughout the year. During the past several summers, one of the highlights has been the performances by the award winning Figures of Speech Theater in conjunction with the Northeast Harbor Library.

Art Shows
During the summer months, several artists and groups take advantage of the Neighborhood House's space and location for art shows and sales. Not to be outdone, the art works created by summer campers is also often put on display.

Concerts
While the sound of music can often be heard bellowing from inside Neighborhood House with popular performances such as those organized and offered by the Austin-Acadia Connection, the Neighborhood House is perhaps best known for hosting the Mount Desert Festival of Chamber Music. For over 40 years now, each summer the Festival has treated the community with the performances of acclaimed musicians from around the world.
